Ugh spammers. I hate them so much.¬†ūü§¨¬†

How do you deal with spam and spammers on your website? Do you have any helpful tips you want to share?

I had a brief period where we had a huge spam attack and it made me slightly amend our spam prevention methods. It seemed to work and it was actually pretty simple. It's a simple question that asks for the colour of an object. It seems to have stopped most of the spam.

Yeah, the attack seems to come in waves. After I've stopped one wave it calms down for a while and I start to believe I have it all under control and that the spam prevention steps I've taken works. And then they come back.

Thanks for the tip, I will definitely test to add a similar security question!

Block visitors from Russia. It's that easy.

That seems too harsh. And I don't want to lose potential users from a whole region.

I am finding it difficult to deal with spammers, in MyBB i usually have the first 5 posts monitored and then the users can posts free without any moderation. Which helped me in cutting down spam, but now in WoltLab i need to find a way.

That is probably a good way to stop spam, but it also involves a lot of moderation and I'm afraid it will have negative effects on user engagement from new users. Sure, your existing users will see much less spam, but it doesn't stop spam bots from registering accounts and it won't reduce the time I spend moderating.

I totally agree with you, i had some disagreement with some users.  So i am not following it anymore, different question sets, Google captcha is helping me somehow.

I have a good ole $25 add-on I bought from Ozzy that keeps them from signing up. Very rarely and occasionally they get past it and you have to fix it on your own but this is rare. It keeps almost all bots from signing up. He named it the Spamminator. But I don't let actual users spam on my forums. My moderators handle that.

All of my websites are built on WordPress, and Akismet does a good job dealing with spam so I never have any issues. There were a few times when I had to manually set up a honeypot on a Cf7 form as an extra layer of protection, but that's all it took.

Also on WP, get the plugin Hide Login and change your login URL to prevent hackers. This and Akismet are my go-tos when launching a new WP website.

Spammers are full in this world and they are looking for a chance to submit form without any restriction. On my site i was using feedback form without any restriction and noticed after few weeks that per day 10+ garbage message are appearing in mail and database. I just put captcha and now its normal, getting some garbage email till now but not like past.

In forums, i think @Jasonidea is very good. You can check few posts in starting and then allow them to post on regular basis without any restriction.

On one of my bigger and more popular forums, I have deactivated public user profiles and implemented a manual approval system, like @Jason mentioned in his post. But the problem I have right now are not really with those annoying spambots, those are fairly easy to block with various captchas and such these days. The problem I have, which seem much harder to stop, are the real life human spammers that can easily bypass spambot measures and register on your forums and/or comment sections. Right now on that popular forum, I have 1286 messages that needs manual approval. And most of those are just spam or trash posts from spammers that are too dumb to realize that none of their content is visible to the public until their posts/account have been approved. There just doesn't seem to be any way to stop these spammers. I spend most of my time on that board these days just getting rid of spam instead of creating meaningful content for the site. I think I'm going mad here, haha!

I was using same problem with my previous website, i was receiving many emails (Garbage message) that you are getting message from this one, and most of name were like "xlksdf", "sdfsda" means without any meaning. So i just removed forum and add our email with email protection script so if any one click on link then a popup with open and he can send message from there. In popup captcha active, so now its working fine for me.
